Mental Edge Fitness

Performance is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. Since this is true, why do we spend most of our time training the physical? Let’s focus on mental edge fitness.

As a former women’s college basketball athlete, I remember spending countless hours in the gym or in the weight room working on my strength, stamina and jump shot. Then, we woke up at 5:00 a.m. to lift weights. Finally, we headed over to the track for cardio and conditioning.

We trained and worked hard each day. However, on game day our wins and losses didn’t always come down to being physically fit or having enough stamina. It came down to mental fitness. In fact, the team that overcame the mental blocks, blocked out the negative self-talk and didn’t dwell on mistakes was often the team that was able to come out with a victory.

There Is a Way to Train

Our brains are so complex. If people knew there was a way to train their brains for optimal performance, wouldn’t they want to know how? If people knew there was a way to get feedback on those mental blocks and ways to recover faster after a mental mistake, wouldn’t they want to know how? Well guess what, there is a way. Of course, there is a way to train our brains and bodies for optimal performance and it’s called biofeedback.

If you’ve ever worn a heart rate monitor to monitor your heart rate, you’ve experienced biofeedback. Biofeedback works by attaching sensors to various parts of your body to measure physiological activity like brain waves, heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate and muscle tension.

The benefit of wearing the sensors is so you can see these measurements in real-time on a computer screen.  With these sensors, you can get immediate feedback on your typically hidden mental and physical responses.  Then, you are able to experiment with modifying your thinking and breathing to facilitate desired physiological changes. Having the ability to get immediate feedback on how you’re performing and understanding what’s working and what’s not can give you the mental edge you desire.

Mental Edge Fitness Solutions are powered by biofeedback services. Biofeedback is the art and science of using the mind and cutting edge technologies to control various parts of your body to measure physiological activity.

Mental Edge Fitness Challenge: #mentaledgefitness

I challenge you to engage in one Mental Fitness activity this week. If you don’t have access to a biofeedback facility, try one of these options below or create your own:

  1. Read a book- Reading helps keep the brain active.
  2. Challenge your intellect and memory- Try something new this week, learn something new. Stretch yourself mentally and share it with others.
  3. Put the phone down for a moment and engage in stimulating conversations- Learn about something and share it with your friends in family. This gives the brain an opportunity to explore and enquire.
